4 takeaways from this year’s NGA Expo
Show season is certainly a busy time of year for us but we love the opportunity to travel and reconnect with old friends. A couple weeks ago our adventures took us to beautiful San Diego — always a welcome destination this time of year — for the National Grocers Association show.
Here are our show highlights.
- Bigger and better. This year’s NGA Expo was the biggest in at least the last decade with more than 400 companies exhibiting at the show. Overall attendance also topped 3,400. That’s great news for the show and our industry.
- It’s in the bag. Congratulations to Dwayne Campbell, a Hy-Vee employee from West Des Moines, Iowa. Campbell was crowned this year’s Best Bagger, taking home the cash prize of $10,000. Baggers were judged on their speed, appearance, weight distribution in the bag, style, technique and attitude. When it was all done, Campbell was crowned champion. Congrats Dwayne.
- Creative with contests. The annual creative choice awards are also a fun event to take in to see what those in our industry are doing to move the market forward in new and exciting ways. Coborn’s had a great event, winning awards in the Public Service or Charitable Cause Event category and the Connections through TV and Radio category. ShopRite was also a multiple award winner, taking the big store title (those with 15 or more locations) in Center Store/GM/HBC and Connections through Print.
- Youth abounds. From the student case study competition to the lectures and even out in the exhibit hall, it was so refreshing to see so many young faces taking their first steps into the industry. You guys are the future of grocery and we can’t wait to see where inspiration takes you — and the marketplace — in the years ahead.
