Become a Leader No Matter your Role: A Quick Guide to the Basics
There are a handful of ways to work your way up at Restaurant Technologies. So, if you’ve just landed a new job with us, congratulations! We are thrilled to have you on our team. If this career field is one you’re passionate about and want to clinch a manager or executive position, we welcome that enthusiasm. While our job descriptions vary by category, one quality we look for in all of them is leadership. In this post, we’ll shed light on what it means to be a leader and how to be a leader to your fellow co-workers.
Simply put, a leader is someone who takes initiative and shows a team of like minded individuals how to excel. This can range from making sure the equipment is being cleaned before and after disposing of a restaurant’s used oil to strategically planning how to best perform your job functions. Being a leader is one of the many ways you can prove you are passionate about your position and are eager to work your way up internally.
First and foremost, don’t simply meet expectations; exceed them. Once you’re finished your tasks, ask your manager what other duties you can take on to alleviate the rest of the team’s workload. We know you have the potential in you! Now, we want to see you execute it in terms of superior performance. It will be clear when you have a desire to move into a top leadership role by the way in which you execute your role.
Inspire others by being collaborative. Take advantage of any downtime you have by bringing the team together to discuss ways to be more efficient, how to make the job easier while maintaining superior standards, and asking each person to add suggestions. You don’t have to be the main leader in your position to do this. Just take ten minutes to learn what methods can be improved and how the team will go about it. Not only does this make you stand out, it’s a great way to start conversations with your colleagues about positive change and helps the company, as a whole, succeed.
Take time to self-reflect. You likely know what your strengths and weaknesses are, but it helps to write them down so you can come up with a solid plan to improve on your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. Remember, you don’t have to turn this into your boss, so be as honest as possible with yourself. Plus, it’s best that you notice and improve on your weaknesses before your superior mentions them to you so that you can tackle it before it becomes a problem. If you know what your weaknesses are but aren’t sure how to improve them, don’t be afraid to ask for help or use online resources. We want you to succeed, so we’re happy to offer as much advice on the matter at hand as possible.
Think and plan strategically by asking yourself questions about your job. Ask yourself questions such as: How can this job be done better, How can I improve to add more value to the organization, and What is the root cause of common problems? Now you’re ready to come up with solutions to these questions and submit a proposal to your superiors!
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you see someone performing their job in a way that inspires you, don’t hesitate to ask that person if they would be willing to have an informal meeting to discuss their tips and ask career-related questions. Even if that person is working in a different department, at Restaurant Technologies, we all work as a cohesive team, so we encourage you to get to know each other and learn from each other. Chances are, everyone will be happy to give you advice!
